Effect of Academic Grades on Overall Performance Ranking of Entry Level Graduates in Private International Audit Firms in Nairobi, Kenya

Employee’s academic attainment plays a big role in employee relationship and is of importance to employees and employers. For employers, academic attainment plays a big role in determining whether an employee will perform on the task given on not. This study aimed to find out the effect of academic grades on overall performance ranking of entry level graduates in private international audit firms in Nairobi, Kenya. The study was guided by a descriptive research design. This study targeted entry-level staff in the four largest private international audit firms in Kenya including Deloitte, PWC, Ernst & Young and KPMG. There are 207 entry-level staff within 1 - 5 years’ experience in the four firms. Out of 207, the study sampled 135 respondents who were randomly selected. This study made use of primary data where semi-structured questionnaires were used for the collection of data. The quantitative data in this research was analyzed by descriptive statistics and inferential statistics using Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS version 20). Descriptive statistics included measures of central tendencies (mean), frequencies and percentages. Inferential statistics included correlation and regression, which was used to establish the relationship between the independent and the dependent variables in this study. The findings indicated that indicated that there is a positive association between academic grades and the overall performance ranking of entry level graduates in private international audit firms in Kenya. This was supported by a correlation value of 0.296 and p value of 0.004. The study concluded that academic grade has a positive and significant effect on performance ranking of entry level graduates in private international audit firms in Kenya.
